Dr. Calvin
Dee Glenn Dr. Calvin Dee Glenn, 78, of Lubbock, passed away Monday,
February 16, 2009, after being hospitalized at University Medical Center. Born June 23, 1930, in Cunningham, Kan., he
is preceded in death by parents, Elmer and Elva Glenn; and brother-in-law, Carroll Lee Walter. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Charlene Glenn; sister, Patricia Berends and Husband, Harold,
Damascus, Ore.; brother, Dallas Glenn and wife, Verna, Clarinda, Iowa; sister, Carol Walter, Wichita, Kan.; brother, Kenny
Glenn and wife, Marilyn, Cunningham, Kan., children, David Glenn and wife, Vicki, Saint Clout, Minn., Susan Boone, Brownsville,
John R Glenn, Columbia, Mo., and Jessica Shaw, Ruidoso, N.M.; grandchildren, Jennifer and Michael Glenn, Hannah and Derek,
Hurley, Thomas, Justin and Autumn, Ethan and Hannah Boone, Sadie and Carlea Shaw; and great-grandchildren, Nolan and Cameron
Hurley. Calvin, who preferred “Cal,” grew up on a
central Kansas wheat farm, was a Korean War veteran, and graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State
University in 1960. He later owned and operated a large and small animal veterinary practice in Aberdeen, S.D., serving
farmers, ranchers and surrounding communities throughout a 75 mile radius. He then joined the USDA as a Veterinarian
Supervisor in Louisville, Ky., and transferred to Lubbock in 1989, through his retirement in 1998. His passions included family gatherings, bird hunting, fishing, gardening, helping with the wheat harvest
on Glenn Family Farms, painting, lapidary work, golfing and Brittany-Spaniel bird dogs. He served as the President of
the South Dakota Veterinary Association and later as the president of the Aberdeen Country Club. He was recognized as
a Kentucky Colonel and served as the Mayor of Meadowbrook Farms, Ky. He was active in the Senior Men’s Golf Association
of Hillcrest Country Club. A memorial service was held in the
chapel of the First Christian Church of Lubbock, with Dr. Michael Passmore officiating. Inurnment will take place in
Maud Cemetery, Cunningham, Kan., in June. Date and time will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be sent to Kansas State University Foundation College of Veterinary Medicine. --------------------------------- Claire
Ella McMannis Furtado
Pratt,
Kan. - Claire Ella McMannis Furtado, age 91, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Pratt Regional Medical Center. She
was born Dec. 1, 1917, on the family farm northwest of Iuka, the daughter of Lawrence and Louise Rieniets McMannis. She graduated from Pratt High School in 1937 and from Wichita Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 where she worked as a surgical
nurse. She also worked at Dr. Waylan’s Hospital in Nashville, Kan., and as a private duty nurse in Pratt. During
World War II, she visited her brothers who were stationed in California, and decided to stay. She worked as an office nurse
for 30 years in Oakland. While there, she met the love of her life, Alfred Furtado. They married on Sept. 13, 1964. He
preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 2002. In 2004 she returned to Pratt from their retirement home in Santa Rosa, Calif. She was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church in Santa Rosa and the Pratt Presbyterian Church. She served as moderator
of the Knox Presbyterian Women’s Society for many years where she was instrumental in the building project for the Multi
Cultural Child Development Pre-School. She also gave many years of service to Treasure House, a non-profit organization that
raised money for the aid of the homeless in Santa Rosa. She is survived by six nieces and nephews, Paul McMannis and
Kim McCary of Port Townsend, Wash., Helen Holcomb of Cunningham, Sue Ellen Piccus of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., Roger
McMannis of Marbleton, Wyo., and Linda Weingart of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 15 great-nieces and -nephews and 12 great-great-nieces
and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Donald J., Darrell R. and L. Robert “Bob”
McMannis; a nephew, Michael McMannis and a great-nephew. Funeral services were held Monday at Pratt Presbyterian Church
with Dr. Angela Madden presiding. Burial was in Iuka Cemetery, Iuka. Memorials may be made to the Pratt Presbyterian
